Summary

The Carbondale Creative District + Carbondale Arts are kicking off their Mural Express Project which will produce 4-6 murals in Carbondale, Colorado over the next two years (2019 and 2020). We believe that art can be transformative and the impact of community mural making has value way beyond the art on the walls. It is a form of expression that gives voice to what is important in our community and world. We have two upcoming opportunities with the aim to bring art to public spaces, by transforming large empty walls into energetic, and engaging spaces for the community to participate with and/or enjoy.

PROJECT SUMMARY
The Carbondale Creative District + Carbondale Arts are kicking off their Mural Express Project which will produce 4-6 murals in Carbondale, Colorado over the next two years (2019 and 2020). We believe that art can be transformative and the impact of community mural making has value way beyond the art on the walls. It is a form of expression that gives voice to what is important in our community and world. We have two upcoming opportunities with the aim to bring art to public spaces, by transforming large empty walls into energetic, and engaging spaces for the community to participate with and/or enjoy.

PROJECT ONE
Carbondale Arts is seeking an artist or artist team to create a mural on the east facing wall of the Seven Stars Rebekah Lodge Near New Store, located at 3rd and Main Streets. The selected artwork must address the themes of Friendship, Love, Truth, and Inclusion, or variations of this theme. The mural does not need to express all words of the theme, but can embody any of the above thematic paths.
The surface of the wall is a light-colored brick, with total wall dimensions of approximately 26 feet high by 35 feet wide, with the option to utilize the full height or just one of the halves (the wall is divided by a line of bricks halfway up the wall - see photo). Dimensions of the mural design may vary.

PROJECT TWO
Carbondale Arts is seeking an artist or artist team to create a mural on the east facing wall of the Century Link building located at 4th and Main Streets. This wall is located in our central square of the Carbondale Creative District where many events take place. We are open to ideas, but some avenues for exploration could include cultural heritage, Carbondale history, local food production, animals, a thought-provoking quote with visuals...etc.
The surface of the wall is a dark-colored brick, with total wall dimensions of approximately 13.5 feet high by 60 feet wide, with the option to utilize the full height or just the lower portion (the wall is divided by a line of bricks a little over 8 feet up the wall - see photo). Dimensions of the mural design may vary.

2019 PROJECT TIMELINE/SCHEDULE
- May 31: Applications due
- June 20: Notifications sent to all applicants
- A finalized sketch of the winning design is due at least one month prior to the beginning of painting.
- August/September: Painting will take place (exact dates are flexible within this timeframe and will be negotiated with individual artists).

COMPENSATION
Each Project has a budget of $5,000-$7,000. You'll be asked to enter your estimated expenses for the material cost of paint, and compensation for the artist(s) time, on the Artist Application form as directed. Carbondale Arts will manage the preparation of the wall and scaffolding which do not need to be calculated in the artist’s cost estimate.
