Summary

As part of its commitment to serving and supporting local artists in the Roaring Fork Valley, Carbondale Arts and The Art Base are hosting a workshop series on art and business, with the first day of workshops taking place at The Launchpad in Carbondale. These workshops are free for current members of Carbondale Arts, The Art Base and The Red Brick, but nonmembers are welcome to join for $20 per workshop or $35 for the full day.

Workshop I | PR 101 for Artists: Creating Buzz, Telling Stories

10a.m. to 12p.m. | Facilitated by Lara Whitley

Whitley is an artist and PR/marketing professional with two decades under her belt pitching stories for a variety of clients, including artists and arts and culture organizations. In this all levels workshop, she will discuss the simple, cost-effective, and powerful tool of public relations and how to tell your story in an authentic and attention-grabbing way, with an eye toward making it work for artists. Starting with the basics, we’ll breakdown the rules of the game and explore how to tell your story in an authentic and attention-grabbing way. Workshop II | Making Your Career in the Art World

1 to 3p.m. | Facilitated by Dr. Jeffrey Taylor

Dr. Jeffrey Taylor teaches about the art business at Western State Colorado University where he is the Grosland Director of the Master in Gallery Management & Exhibits Specialization. Dr. Taylor is also the author of Visual Arts Management published by Routledge, which is the first comprehensive textbook to the art business. He continues to remain active in the art world as an appraiser and is a partner in New York Art Forensics, an art forensics laboratory in Brooklyn, NY. He has made frequent press appearances, commenting on the problems of the art market, these include: Wall Street Journal, 60 Minutes, New York Times, CNBC, Village Voice, The New Republic, CBC Radio, The Art Newspaper, and Artsy.  In this workshop "Making Your Career in the Art World," Dr. Taylor will lay out the structure of the art world, art business and art market. Jeffrey will explain all the different professional activities that go on in the art business, and how one can find their own role in the system. He will then go over some various business models that work for artists and gallerists. He will conclude with some group activities that help all participants strategize about career directions.
